LONDON
Retired English footballer David Beckham to be the face of the UNICEF's campaign on fighting the Ebola outbreak.
British media reported on Monday that the 39-year-old former Manchester United midfielder would be drawing attention to the importance of hygiene in avoiding Ebola, which has killed more than 4,000 people.
Sierra Leonean Football Federation President Isha Johansen said that Beckham's support was extremely important for the organization, adding: "Football is like a religion in Sierra Leone.
"All men, women and children support an English Premier League team or a player and David Beckham is the favorite player for the majority."
Johansen pointed out that Beckham's message on Ebola would be pronounced across the African continent in order to increase awareness of the outbreak.
Regarded as one of the most significant players in the England National Football Team, Beckham visited the Sierra Leonean city of Makeni in 2008, where the Ebola outbreak has struck.
