ANKARA (AA) - Azerbaijani Ambassador to Turkey Faig Bagirov held a press meeting regarding some news reports raising questions about the fairness of presidential elections in Azerbaijan.
"The claims do not reflect the truth," the ambassador said referring to some news questioning the fairness, observability, and result of the presidential elections in which Ilham Aliev was re-elected as president for the third term.
The ambassador said, "The elections were considered as positive by international observers including Turkey" reminding that Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated Ilham Aliyev for being elected as president. "As Azerbaijani ambassador, I would like to express my gratitude towards the Republic of Turkey, Turkish government and public for contributing to improve the bilateral relations with Azerbaijan."
Aliyev was re-elected in Wednesday's election after winning 84.68 % of votes.
Succeeding his father, Aliyev has been in power for ten years. He has won a third term as the president.
