Libyan Deputy Industry Minister Hassan al-Droui was shot dead late Saturday in the southern town of Sabha , an official said Sunday.
Al-Droui was at a local market when he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting, Makhlouf al-Ferjani, member of Sirte military council, told Anadolu Agency.
The attackers fled the scene immediately, he added.
The body was transferred to his hometown of Sirte for burial, al-Ferjani said.
Al-Droui, an engineering professor, lived in France before returning to Libya in 2011 to join the uprising against strongman Muammar Gaddafi. He had been earlier accredited for pressuring the Gaddafi-era ambassador to France to resign.
He then represented Sirte in the interim national assembly which served until last August when a parliament was elected. He was later picked up by Prime Minister Ali Zeidan to serve as the deputy industry minister.
Libyans have struggled to restore order to their country since Gaddafi's death three years ago.
