Merkel to visit France in first foreign trip since re-election
German Chancellor is set to visit Paris on Wednesday as the first foreign trip of her third term. Germany’s upcoming Foreign Minister Steinmeier will accompany the Chancellor during the visit
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will head to Paris on Wednesday for her first foreign trip after re-election, government spokesman Steffen Seibert has announced.
“On Wednesday, Chancellor Merkel will hold bilateral talks with President Francois Hollande” Seibert said, during Monday’s government press conference. “The main topic will be the upcoming EU leaders summit, but the leaders will also discuss bilateral and international issues,” Seibert said, adding that the recent developments in Ukraine and Central African Republic will also be on the agenda.
Chancellor Merkel will be accompanied by the upcoming Foreign Minister, a prominent German social democrat, Frank-Walter Steinmeier during her visit to Paris.
On Monday, some ten weeks after the general elections, Merkel’s conservative CDU/CSU alliance and Social Democrats have formally signed the agreement on forming the “grand coalition” government. On Tuesday, Germany’s Federal Parliament is expected to approve Merkel as chancellor.
