OIC urges humanitarian aid for embattled town of Qusayr

Jeddah

Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called Thursday on all segments in Syria to protect civilians in Qusayr who came under fire during the clashes between the opposition and forces loyal to Assad regime.

The statement released by OIC said, “Feelings of revenge or collective punishment should not lead anyone to target civilians,” adding that the organization called on all segments of Syrian society to respond to international community's efforts for a planned international peace conference in Geneva in July and to start peaceful dialogue.

Chairman of Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces George Sabra on Wednesday called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Syrian Red Crescent to send humanitarian aid to people wounded during regime’s attacks on Qusayr, saying that lives of 15,000 people were at danger.

Forces loyal to the Assad regime has retaken the strategic town of Qusayr near the Lebanese border on Wednesday.

Qusayr has been the center of fighting since May 18 between rebels and Syrian troops backed by fighters from the Hezbollah. The clashes there left many people killed and injured.
