MADRID
Syrian opposition groups sought assurances Tuesday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will have no role in a transition government or in the future of the country.
Ahead of an international meeting on Syria in Geneva, a group of around 80 Syrian opposition members concluded their meeting in Madrid as they ruled out negotiations with the Syrian president.
"Bashar al-Assad will no way have a role in the transition period and in the decisions related to the future of the country," said a declaration issued after the two-day meeting.
Syrian opposition groups also announced that a "wise men council" would be set up that will also be a part of the transition government.
Syrian opposition groups are expected to meet in Istanbul on May 23.
