Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi on Monday called for the safety of all vessels, including Japanese ships, to be ensured in the Strait of Hormuz during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Motegi expressed concern over the “prolonged” conflict and stressed that a swift resolution is of paramount importance, according to a statement from Japan’s Foreign Ministry.
He also urged all parties involved to continue diplomatic engagement.
Motegi further called for the release of a Japanese national detained in Iran.
The Japanese foreign minister also “expressed his grave concern over the current deterioration of the situation in the Middle East” and appreciated Pakistan’s mediation efforts during a separate phone call with Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
An “early de-escalation” to the situation is of “utmost importance,” Motegi said, expressing Japan’s willingness to “work closely” with Pakistan on “safe navigation” in the Strait of Hormuz.
Dar emphasized Islamabad’s commitment to supporting “all initiatives aimed at de-escalation and the achievement of lasting peace and stability,” according to a statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry.
