Yemen foreign minister hails relations with Turkey

ADEN, Yemen

Yemeni Foreign Minister Khalid al-Yamani on Tuesday hailed his country's relations with Turkey.

"Yemen is proud of its close and historic relations with Turkey," al-Yamani said as he received the credentials of the new Turkish Ambassador to Yemen, Faruk Bozgoz.

Al-Yamani highlighted the Turkish support for the Yemeni government and Turkey's "valuable contributions in the fields of relief, development and training of human cadres in Yemen", according to the official Saba News Agency.

He stressed that the Yemeni government was keen on strengthening relations with Turkey in all fields.

Bozgoz, for his part, reiterated his country's support for the Yemeni government.

Turkey puts relations with Yemen as one of its priorities and will continue to support the Yemeni people in all fields, he said.

Impoverished Yemen has remained wracked by violence since 2014, when Shia Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including the capital Sanaa.

The conflict escalated in 2015 when Saudi Arabia and its Sunni-Arab allies launched a devastating air campaign in Yemen aimed at rolling back Houthi gains.

The ongoing violence has destroyed much of Yemen’s infrastructure, including water and sanitation systems, prompting the UN to describe the situation as one of “the worst humanitarian disasters of modern times”.
