Xiaomi uses ‘bulletproof’ coat in new electric vehicle batteries, claims CEO

ISTANBUL

Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun dropped three watermelons, each coated with his company’s “bulletproof” material, off a building, but suffering no damage, claiming the same material is used for electric car batteries, shown in a video he shared on Friday.

The stunt, which took place on the sixth floor of the company’s car factory on the outskirts of Beijing, was intended to showcase the material’s durability.

Lei asserted that the same coating is used on the underside of car battery packs of Xiaomi’s new SU7 Ultra electric vehicles.

The video demonstrated the watermelons, coated with a layer of grey "bulletproof" material, falling to the ground without taking any damage.

According to the South China Morning Post, citing Xiaomi’s website, the coating provides “tear, scratch, and puncture resistance more than 10 times greater than traditional PVC coatings.”

The coating can reportedly be useful for preventing fires in accidents by protecting the battery from puncture damage. It is also speculated that the material may be a type of polyurea, known for its waterproof properties.
