Favorites advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York on Tuesday.
Men’s no. 2 seed Roger Federer started his 16th consecutive U.S. Open in style, beating Argentina's Leonardo Mayer 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.
The 34-year-old Swiss has not lost an opening round at a grand slam since the 2003 Roland Garros.
Scottish third seed and former U.S. Open champion Andy Murray defeated Nick Kyrgios of Australia 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

In women's game, world number two Simona Halep advanced when No. 99 Marina Erakovic of New Zealand withdrew with a knee injury while trailing 6-2, 3-0.
Two-time Wimbledon champion and 5th seed Petra Kvitova eased past Germany's Laura Siegemund 6-1, 6-1, while two-time U.S. Open runner-up Victoria Azarenka had a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over world No. 56 Lucie Hradecka.
