Toni Kroos confirmed his retirement from the national team on Friday, following Germany’s elimination from EURO 2020 after a 2-0 loss to England.

"I had made the decision to quit after this tournament for a long time," he said on social media.

The 31-year-old midfielder added that he wants to focus on his Real Madrid career in the upcoming seasons, and that he will not participate in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Kroos was a part of Germany's World Cup-winning squad in 2014, when they defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final in Rio de Janeiro.

Having scored 17 goals since March 2010, Kroos was called up to the German senior squad for the 106th time.
