LONDON

Argentine footballer Eduardo Salvio was denounced by his former wife Thursday for gender violence after allegedly running her over in his vehicle before fleeing.

The incident is alleged to have taken place early Thursday between Salvio and Magalí Aravena in the upper-class neighborhood of Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires, near his residence.

Security cameras recorded an incident between a vehicle and someone on the streets of Juana Manso and Azucena Villaflor.

Salvio, 31, who has appeared 14 times for the national football team and currently plays for domestic giants Boca Juniors, is accused of allegedly running over his former wife, causing her to fall to the ground, before fleeing inside the vehicle.

Aravena alleged she stood in front of a black Mercedes Benz car with Salvio, who was allegedly accompanied by another woman, when the vehicle moved forward and allegedly struck her right leg and caused her to fall.

According to news agency Telam, Aravena received medical treatment to one of her knees from emergency services before informing police about the incident.

Investigators described the incident as "injuries in the context of gender violence," with prosecutor Nancy Aron arranging for Aravena to be taken to the gender violence office to file a complaint. She ordered a anti-panic button and security cameras for Aravena.

As details continue to emerge, authorities ordered the seizure of the vehicle, however, no arrest warrant has been issued.

Salvio's lawyer said his client will make himself available to authorities "to prove his innocence,” and claimed to have proof that he did nothing wrong after being denounced for gender-based violence.

Boca Juniors' issued a statement reaffirming the club's commitment to issues of gender and equality.

Salvio could face a "warning, suspension, dismissal and expulsion,” according to the club's protocol regarding inclusion and equality.

After being married for a decade, the couple recently separated by mutual agreement.

The footballer made his debut for Lanus in 2008, before moving to Atletico de Madrid in Spain then to Portugal to play for Benfica.

He was featured in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

In 2019, he returned to Argentina to play for Boca Juniors.
