Borussia Dortmund of Germany's Bundesliga will play without Axel Witsel for the rest of this year due to his facial injury, the club said in a statement on Monday.

"Following the domestic accident, the midfielder had to undergo an operation in the Oral and Facial Surgery Department of the Klinikzentrum Nord Hospital in Dortmund. The operation was a success and Axel is already back at home recuperating. We wish him a speedy recovery!" the club said on their website.

The Belgian international midfielder produced three goals and three assists in 13 matches so far this season.

Throughout his career, Witsel played for Belgium's Standard Liege, Portuguese team Benfica, Zenit in Russia and China's Tianjin Quanjian.

Witsel, 30, also helped Belgium win the bronze medal at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
