Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi announced Rome's candidacy for the 2024 Summer Olympics during a meeting of the Italian National Olympic Committee on Monday, reported the country's national media.

Renzi said that Rome had applied to host the Olympics for the second time in its history as the Italian capital had already organized them in 1960.

He added that Italy should provide conditions for Rome's 2024 candidacy.

Moreover, Italian media said that the government was aiming to hold the Games in other cities such as Florence, Milan, Naples and Sardinia -- in addition to Rome.

Italy withdrew its candidacy for the 2020 Summer Olympics in 2012 due to the economic crisis it was suffering from.

Italy will make its official application in 2015.

The host nation of the 2024 Summer Olympics will be unveiled at the International Olympic Committee Congress, to be held in the Peruvian capital of Lima, in September of 2017.
