The legendary American football coach and sportscaster John Madden died at the age of 85 late on Tuesday.
"The NFL unexpectedly lost one of the most pivotal people in the history of the game on Tuesday when it was announced that Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and legendary broadcaster John Madden died at the age of 85," the NFL said in a statement.
Madden helped the then-Oakland Raiders gain their first Super Bowl win in 1977.
Following his retirement, he became a popular NFL sportscaster and the face of the sports video game, Madden NFL Football.
