Obama praises USA football team's World Cup performance

WASHINGTON

U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated the USA national football team's performance in FIFA World Cup 2014, speaking with goalkeeper Tim Howard and captain Clint Dempsey over the phone.

"You guys did us proud," said Obama, in a video released by the White House on Thursday. "To see the way you guys captured the hearts and the imaginations of the whole country is unbelievable."

The USA were knocked out by Belgium in a 2-1 second-round thriller, despite a heroic performance from goalkeeper Tim Howard. The shot-stopper made a total of 16 saves in the game, setting a World Cup record.

Obama joked about that as well, saying Howard would have to shave his beard before returning to the country -- to avoid being recognized by mobs of fans thrilled by his effort.
