Switzerland's Belinda Bencic wins Olympic gold in singles women's tennis

ANKARA

Belinda Bencic from Switzerland took Olympic gold in Tokyo, beating her Czech opponent Marketa Vondrousova in the women's tennis singles final on Saturday.

Ranked number 12 in the world, Bencic, 24, beat Vondrousova 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 at the Ariake Tennis Centre Court.

Bencic became the first Swiss woman to claim gold in tennis at the Olympic Games.

Vondrousova, who is ranked 42, returned home with the silver medal.

Sixth-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, 26, won bronze.

Svitolina toppled her Kazakh opponent Elena Rybakina 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

She won her country’s first-ever Olympic medal in tennis.
