Weightlifting: Turkey wins silver in Youth Olympics

ISTANBUL

Turkish athlete Caner Toptas has claimed a silver medal in the third edition of the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in men's weightlifting at the 62kg category.

Toptas lifted 263 kg on Monday in total after India's Jeremy Lalrinnunga who achieved a total of 274 kg to claim the gold. Colombia's Villar Estiven Jose got the bronze medal with 260 kg.

The third edition of the Youth Olympic Games began on Saturday in Buenos Aires, Argentina featuring some 4,000 athletes.

The world’s best young athletes age 15-18 will be in the Argentinian capital for Olympic Games to compete in 32 sports and 36 disciplines for the honor of 1,250 medals in total.

The games will be held on Oct. 7-18.

New sports such as breaking, sport climbing, futsal, roller sports, and karate will premiere in Buenos Aires before joining the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, along with new disciplines and events such as BMX freestyle, kiteboarding, beach handball, and acrobatic gymnastics.

For the first time in Olympic history, the Youth Olympics will also set a precedent for gender equality with an equal number of female and male athletes among the 4,000.
