EDIRNE, Turkey

A fugitive former prosecutor who is believed to have links to the group behind last year’s defeated coup was caught in Turkey's northwestern Edirne province while trying to flee to Greece.

Zafer Kilinc had been accused of military espionage and misconduct and he was sought by police in a court case in which he faced up to eight years in prison.

Kilinc, his wife, and two daughters were among a group of suspects when they were held by the security forces in Ipsala district along the Greek border.

FETO and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the July 2016 defeated coup in Turkey which left 250 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.

Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.
