Heavy snowfall has hit Turkey Tuesday resulting in the cancelation of hundreds of flights, disruption of ground transport and the shutdown of schools in certain provinces, local officials said.

Authorities in eight provinces including Adana, Aksaray and Konya said schools had been closed for one day in certain districts due to the weather conditions.

Turkish Airlines canceled 151 domestic and international flights while other airlines including Pegasus and Onur Air announced that they had also canceled flights due to the weather. They did not specify the number.

The fast ferry and inter-city sea bus trips (IDO) in Istanbul and Bursa Sea Bus trips were also canceled on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, up to 1.4 cm of snow have accumulated in the famous Uludag skiing center of Bursa province. In certain eastern provinces, snow accumulation reached up to 25cm.

Snowfall also affected traffic across Turkey. Most of the roads in a number of eastern provinces were closed.
