ANKARA, Turkey
A Turkish soldier was martyred in southeast Turkey on Friday, the military said in a statement.
The Turkish General Staff said the soldier had been heavily wounded in an attack by PKK terrorists in Sur, Diyarbakir province, and later died in hospital.
In another development, Diyarbakir security forces said police seized more than 150 grenades, 200 rockets, 57 long-barreled weapons and 6,000 cartridges and defused 13 improvised explosive devices in raids at separate addresses.
Fighting between security forces and the terrorist organization PKK in Sur peaked over the last month, with the military reporting more than 120 PKK deaths.
The PKK - considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU - resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in last July. Since then, more than 240 members of the security forces have been martyred and thousands of PKK terrorists killed in operations across Turkey and northern Iraq.
