MADRID (AA) - Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo said, neither a European Union (EU) member nor any other country should tell Turkey how to deal with the Gezi Park events.
Replying the journalists' questions regarding Gezi Park events, Margolo said, it was timeless to lecture Turkey about how to solve the crisis, and added, "If Turkey demads something from the EU, it should have no doubt of receiving friendship, reconciliation and help."
Stating, neither an EU member nor any other country should tell Turkey how to cope with the Gezi Park events, Margulo further stated that Turkey showed its importance through its efforts for solution to Syria issue, as well as for leading the Islamic world.
"Turkey is a country which could prove that Islam and democracy comply with each other, and a role-model for Arab countries in the democratization process," said Margulo, emphasizing that Turkey was also the key country for the giant projects that Europe had to approve in the coming years such as energy-transfer from South Caucasia to Europe.
"Therefore", said Margulo, "we are watching the events in Turkey closely," and announced, he will meet his French counterpart Laurent Fabius on Wednesday and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on Thursday to discuss the events in Turkey.
- Germany calls for dialogue
On the other hand, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said, they expected Ankara to reduce tension through dialogue.
He added, Turkish government sent wrong signals to its own country, as well as Europe, by showing over-reaction to the protests.
