ISTANBUL
The court sentenced former air forces chief, Halil Ibrahim Firtina, navy commander, Adm. Ozden Ornek, former army commander Cetin Dogan to 20 years in prison in the case which has came to be dubbed as "the Sledgehammer," with a reference to the name of the coup plan.
The court originally sentenced Firtina, Ornek and Dogan to life in prison but their sentences were reduced.
The court sentenced 78 suspects to 18 years including retired army commander Ergin Saygun, retired gen. Bilgin Balanli, and retired gen. Engin Alan, who was elected to the parliament in latest general elections in June 2011.
The court sentenced 214 suspects to 16 years in prison.
Thirty-six suspects were acquitted.
