ANKARA
Turkey's main opposition leader has called on the government to end identity-based politics and instead respect all citizens’ beliefs.
During a meeting with a group of newspaper editors in Istanbul on Saturday, the country's new prime minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, stated that he was trying to use a softer tone in order to ease polarization in Turkey, adding: "A new era has started; we have had a new president and a new government."
However, speaking at a meeting of his Republican People’s Party on Monday in Ankara, party chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu said: "If he [Davutoglu] wants to avoid any tension in society, he should respect any individual’s lifestyle, identity, sect or religion."
Kilicdaroglu said that the CHP were against policies that divide the society.
