All of the Turkish dailies covered the lives of female village guards in Turkey's eastern province of Tunceli, photographed by Anadolu Agency journalists. "Mother guards" headlined daily SABAH, "Both guard and mother" headlined daily HURRIYET and "Mother with kalashnikov on guard" added daily VATAN referring to the 25 women taking turns in serving as village guards in Tunceli, where terrorist attacks take place quite often. These women do their daily housework, look after their children and guard the village with kalashnikov rifles against terrorist attacks. Turkan Budak, one of those women village guards, said, "Yes to the resolution talks. We would like to raise our children in a peaceful environment," according to the dailies.
"Economy puts brakes on growth 2.2%" headlined daily MILLIYET and "Bitter brake in growth" headlined daily ZAMAN over the announcement of Turkey's gross domestic product (GDP) as 2.2 percent in 2012 by the Turkish Statistics Institute on Monday. The outcome was below market expectations and it marked the lowest GDP growth since 2009. "We deserved more, it came as a bitter brake," Turkey's Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan said in regards to the sharp decline in growth. Turkey's Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek stated that the 2.2 percent figure was a "success" in comparison to the global economic slowdown and the deepening of the European crisis.
Turkish dailies also covered the wise men commission formed to guide during the process of the resolution of the Kurdish issue. "49 people were called and told they were wise men" headlined daily HURRIYET over Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag's declaration of the "wise men" were selected and informed. "Wise men gathering this week" headlined daily YENI SAFAK referring to the meeting of the 49 men with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to work on the resolution process. The "wise men committee" will carry out conferences, seminars, panels and meetings in all seven regions of Turkey.
