Quacquarelli Symonds, a company specialized education and study abroad, has listed 12 Turkish universities among the best universities of the world.
According to the general listing, Bilkent University ranked within the 400-450 band; Sabanci, Koc, Istanbul Technical University were placed within the 501-550 band; Hacettepe, Bogazici, Istanbul Technical University (ITU) ranked within the 551-600 band, and Cukurova University ranked within the 601+ band.
The Middle East Technical University (METU), ITU and Istanbul University ranked among the best 200 universities according to QS' scientific listing.
"We set an example for the other universities. Such an evaluation from an outsider is very important in terms of increasing competition among the universities," said Prof. Dr. Abdullah Atalar, rector of Bilkent University in the Turkish capital, Ankara.
Director of METU University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) Laboratories Prof. Dr. Ural Akbulut said, METU Civil Engineering ranked within the 51-100 band in the area listing, while several other departments of METU ranked within the 200 band.
Akbulut also added that for the first time a Turkish university, Istanbul University, was listed among the best universities with its law department.
The criteria of the listing were academic reputation, employer opinion, number of references per publication and H index indicator.
