An inauguration ceremony was held for the 720-meter long Deriner Dam on the River Coruh in the northeast of the country which rises 207 meters above the riverbed and 249 meters from the foundations.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan also participated in the opening of the dam via video conference.
The dam is expected to generate 2,118 million kilowatt hours of electricity which is equal to 6 percent of Turkey's total hydropower production.
The dam was constructed by a consortium of Turkey's ERG Insaat A.S., Russian TechnoStroyExport, and Switzerland's Stucky, Abb (Alstom), Sulzer Hydro Ltd and Hydro Vevey companies.
The dam costed nearly 1.4 billion USD.
