Around 118,000 homes are still without power in Australia’s northeastern state of Queensland in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, SBS News reported Tuesday.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said that emergency alerts have been lifted as rainfall has slowed and rivers have begun to subside, as the state begins to recover.
"The rainfall is easing, rivers are receding and the threat of heavy rainfall is disappearing. With that comes the step from response towards recovery," David Crisafulli said.
Nearly 118,000 of the 450,000 homes that lost power during the storm are still without electricity.
"That is a significant amount," Crisafulli said at a media briefing, noting that the electricity company is "working around the clock" to address the issue.
He noted that 360 schools have reopened, meaning "more than half of Queensland's kids are back at school today," and the transportation network is also beginning to recover.
