BAGHDAD

A senior Iraqi army officer was killed along with five other military personnel in a Monday mortar attack on their base in western Bagdad, a security source said.
A group of unidentified militants fired a barrage of artillery shells on army barracks in Baghdad's Zidan district, killing Colonel Qais al-Shemari, three other officers and two soldiers, the source said.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Recent months have witnessed an uptick in violence across Iraq. Although most attacks go unclaimed, Iraqi authorities usually point the finger at Al-Qaeda-linked militants.
