Coronavirus and other developments in Turkey

Turkey administered 387,105 coronavirus vaccine jabs in the past 24 hours, according to official figures.

The country has administered more than 57.45 million doses since it launched a mass vaccination campaign in January, according to the Health Ministry.

More than 37.6 million people have received their first dose, while nearly 17 million have gotten their second dose.

The ministry confirmed 5,530 new infections and 37 deaths in the last 24 hours, while as many as 5,217 more patients have recovered.

During a closed-door meeting at the Vahdettin Pavilion in Istanbul, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Palestinian counterpart, Mahmoud Abbas, discussed regional developments and steps to strengthen ties, according to Turkey's Communications Directorate.

Peace and stability in the region will not be possible as long as the Israeli occupation continues, according to Erdogan, who said Turkey did not and will not remain silent about Israel's atrocities in Palestine.

A member of a family that has been protesting the PKK terror organization since September 2019 in Turkey's southeastern Diyarbakir province told the Turkish president that families feel empowered and expressed gratitude.

"If we had seen this power 30 years ago, perhaps so many mothers would not be crying in Turkey like today. Today, we feel empowered to do this, thanks to you," Turkan Mutlu told Erdogan, as seen in footage from his visit.

COVID-19 updates worldwide

More than 3.39 billion coronavirus vaccine doses have been administered worldwide, according to figures on Our World in Data, a tracking website affiliated with Oxford University.

China leads the global count with more than 1.37 billion jabs, followed by India with 368.99 million.

Turkey is ranked ninth with more than 57.33 million doses, followed by Italy, Indonesia and Mexico.

For the fourth time in 10 days, Russia registered a record number of single-day coronavirus fatalities. A total of 752 people died in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 142,253.

Daily infections remain high, with 25,082 people testing positive, taking the count to 5.75 million and active cases to 433,210, according to Russia's coronavirus emergency task force.

Other global developments

President Jovenel Moise was tortured by assassins before he was killed, according to Haitian authorities.

Moise was tortured in his bedroom while his daughter escaped and his son and staff were forcibly silenced, Carl Henry Destin, one of the judges conducting the investigation, told Haitian newspaper, Le Nouvelliste.

The coffins of 19 victims killed in a genocide in Srebrenica were moved to the Potocari Memorial Cemetery where they will be buried Sunday.

The victims, who will be buried on the 26th anniversary of the genocide in 1995, in which at least 8,372 Bosniak civilians were brutally killed by Serbian forces, were brought to the cemetery on shoulders from the old battery factory used as a base by UN soldiers during the war.
