A group of 21 workers trapped for more than a day in a collapsed tunnel in China’s Fujian Province were rescued Saturday, state media reported.

Xinhua news agency said rescuers began pulling the workers from the 30-meter road tunnel at 11.32 local time (03.32 GMT). Their condition was described as fine.

Jin Min, who led the project to expand the tunnel in Longyan City, said: "When I finished my shift on Thursday evening… there was nothing unusual in the tunnel."

He told Xinhua he was awakened at midnight by a noise. "The window was shaking and people were shouting outside," he said. "I knew something bad had happened."

As the rescue operation was underway, Jin heard the trapped workers knocking on a pipe and later heard their voices, he said.

He added: "I had been worried about them. How should I tell their families? Now I feel relieved."

The road links Xiamen City in Fujian to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province.
