JERUSALEM
A policeman who was critically injured on Tuesday in an attack by two Palestinians on a Jewish synagogue in West Jerusalem succumbed to his wounds, raising the death toll from the attack to five, Israeli police said.
“Zidan Saif age 30 police officer died this evening in hospital of critical wounds in today's attack in Jerusalem synagogue,” police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld wrote on Twitter.
On Tuesday morning, four Israelis were killed and others injured in an attack by two Palestinians carrying axes and guns on a Jewish synagogue in West Jerusalem's Har nof neighborhood, with the two attackers gunned down by Israeli police in the immediate wake of the attack.
The attackers were identified as cousins Ghassan and Oudai Abu Jamal from the neighborhood of Jabal al-Mukaber in occupied East Jerusalem.
Tuesday's attack followed months of tension in Jerusalem and the West Bank, which mounted further late last month after Israeli authorities briefly closed the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex.
