DONETSK, Ukraine
Thirty-five pro-Russian separatists were killed and 50 were wounded in clashes with the Ukrainian army, a correspondent for Anadolu Agency reported Tuesday morning.
The clashes took place following the seizure Monday of Donetsk airport, in the east of the country.
Ukrainian army jets and helicopters shelled Donetsk overnight and two civilians are also reported to have died in clashes that spread to the center of the city. Due to the clashes, the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" declared a curfew from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m.
Following the operations, the "Lugansk People's Republic" declared war on Ukraine.
Armed pro-Russians seized control of the airport in Donetsk on Sunday night, demanding the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops there, the airport’s press office said. Ukraine then launched an operation against the separatists.
