BEIJING
A 9-year-old boy was killed when a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck southwest China's Yunnan province Saturday evening, state media reported.
The boy was asleep when a wall collapsed, Xinhua news agency said, citing local authorities. Eight others were injured in the quake.
The tremor was felt strongly at 18.20 local time (10.20 GMT) in Jinggu county. A 5.8-magnitude quake shook the county 16 hours earlier.
According to figures released late Saturday by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, 14,000 people were affected by the tremors and 36 houses collapsed.
In August, at least 617 people died when a 6.5 magnitude quake struck Yunnan.
