The Egyptian army said Saturday that it had destroyed 69 entry points to underground tunnels in the Sinai Peninsula on the border with the Gaza Strip.

Army spokesman Mohamed Samir said on Facebook that border patrol troops in Sinai had destroyed 69 entry points to underground tunnels on the border with the Gaza Strip between March 28 and April 15.

For over one year, Egyptian authorities have been cracking down on militants in the Sinai Peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The campaign has been accompanied by a spike in militant attacks on security personnel since the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the army in mid-2013.
