CAIRO
Egypt’s prosecutor-general Hisham Barakat was injured in a car bombing in eastern Cairo Monday.
A security source said the car bomb went off as Barakat’s motorcade passed near a military academy in eastern Cairo.
According to the source, the prosecutor-general sustained "light" injuries and was taken to hospital.
Health ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar confirmed that the prosecutor-general was injured in the bombing.
"The prosecutor-general suffered a nose injury and a dislocated shoulder," he told Anadolu Agency. "He suffered some fractures and is now undergoing tests."
Abdel-Ghaffar added that six people – including two policemen – had also sustained injuries in the blast.
Egyptian authorities have yet to comment on the bombing.
A shadowy group calling itself the "Popular Resistance in Giza" claimed responsibility for the attack.
The group claimed in a Facebook post that the prosecutor-general had been seriously injured in the attack.
Anadolu Agency could not verify the authenticity of the claim.
Monday’s bombing comes on the eve of the second anniversary of the June 30 protests, which ended in Egypt's first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, being overthrown in a military coup on July 3, 2013.
Egypt has been dogged by instability ever since as the authorities have carried out a relentless crackdown on dissent that has mainly targeted the ousted president’s supporters, leaving hundreds dead and thousands behind bars.
