A negotiation team composed of European Union (EU) representatives arrived in Ukraine's capital Kiev within the framework of finding a solution to put an end to the current unrest in the country.
"We are here to support the people in the streets," said Polish Member of the European Parliament, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski.
Stating that the situation which led to massive protests across the country did not only stem from Ukraine's refusal to sign the free trade agreement with the EU, Wolski said: "We believe that Ukrainians should be a part of Europe. We would like to discuss this difficult situation. The negotiation team has arrived in Kiev to find a way out of this."
Reminding that the excessive use of force against demonstrators was condemned by the European Parliament (EP), Wolski went on to say: "We are calling for an investigation and the release of detainees. We want both parties to get out of this situation peacefully. Moreover, we support Ukrainians' demand for an early election, and call on Russia not to put pressure on Ukraine."
Meanwhile, also in Kiev, Jerry Buzek, former president of EP said: "The heart of Europe is beating in Kiev right now. The authorities have all kinds of means to solve the problems."
Buzek also expressed his hope that the protestors out in the streets and the opposition were ready to assume their share of the responsibility for the current situation, and sit down to negotiate.
The protests that ensued following President Viktor Yanukovych's announcement on November 21 that the government was suspending association talks with the EU, are still in full force.
Yanukovych opposes signing the deal in question on the grounds that it would spoil relations with Russia.
