closed mixed on Monday as investors assessed falling oil prices, potential new US sanctions against Iran and the outlook for global interest rates.
The pan-European Stoxx 600 edged up 0.05% to 654.49 points, with gains in travel and leisure and basic resources shares offsetting declines in energy, automobile and technology stocks.
Germany’s DAX slipped 0.07% to 26,118.99 points, while France’s CAC 40 fell 0.37% to 8,453.01 and Italy’s FTSE MIB declined 0.24% to 52,542.18.
In contrast, the UK’s FTSE 100 gained 0.35% to 10,854.32, supported by mining and travel stocks.
Spain’s IBEX 35 outperformed its European peers, rising 0.69% to 20,098.6 points.
Oil prices retreated after six consecutive sessions of gains as markets awaited details of Washington’s planned sanctions against Tehran. Lower crude prices supported airline and travel stocks but weighed on energy companies.
Investors also remained cautious ahead of US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at the Jackson Hole symposium and Nvidia’s upcoming quarterly results, which are expected to provide fresh direction for interest-rate expectations and technology shares.
On the data front, Eurostat said the EU’s inflation-adjusted value of sold industrial production increased 2.9% in 2025, marking its first annual rise since 2022 after declines in both 2023 and 2024.
The latest figures came against a mixed regional backdrop. Euro area annual inflation accelerated to 2.9% in July from 2.8% in June, while the bloc’s economy expanded 0.4% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter of 2026.
