Five killed in South Africa plane crash

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa

 Five people were killed Sunday morning when a light medical aircraft flying from Namibia crashed in Cape Town’s Tygerberg nature reserve.

“A light medical aircraft transporting a patient from Namibia to a private hospital in Cape Town crashed, killing all five people on board,” Mark Van der Heever, a spokesman for Cape Town Emergency Services, told Anadolu Agency by phone.

The plane, he said, was first reported missing on Sunday morning after disappearing from radar at about 6.50am local time.

“Our emergency rescue team went to search for the plane and found it had crashed,” he said. 

Van der Heever attributed the crash to poor weather conditions.

“It was very misty in Cape Town this morning,” he said.

The casualties, the spokesman added, included two pilots, a paramedic, a patient, and a fifth passenger whose bodies have since been taken to a local hospital mortuary.
