Thousands of people have been displaced and hundreds of homes submerged underwater in Nigeria's northwestern Kaduna State following heavy rainfall on Sunday and Monday.
“We are now trying to rescue and help thousands of people displaced by the flooding,” Musa Illela, northwest coordinator for Nigeria’s national relief agency, told Anadolu Agency.
“A number of homes have been submerged; now we’re collaborating with other government agencies to assist the victims,” added Illela.
He went on to say that numerous residents of affected areas – which include several parts of the city of Kaduna, Kaduna State’s regional capital – remained trapped in their homes.
Nigerian environmental agencies, meanwhile, have predicted more heavy rainfall across the country, advising local authorities to evacuate residents in the areas most at risk.
Officials fear a repeat of the destruction that followed a spate of heavy rainfall in 2012, which led to the death of hundreds of people across the country.
