A Turkish citizen has been taken into custody at Dusseldorf's airport on suspicion of terrorism, said German police officials Tuesday.
Suspect Irfan D, was taken into custody on Monday during the passport control at the airport while coming from Turkey's capital Ankara, according to a statement issued by the Potsdam police office on Tuesday.
Irfan D. has been sought by the U.S. since 2011, in connection to the financing of "the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan,” listed as a terrorist organization by Washington.
The police stated that the suspect also had the Dutch citizenship.
The spokesman for Dusseldorf's Prosecutor General's office, Nils Busse, said that he was taken into custody due to USA's request of extradition.
"Dusseldorf's Prosecutor General's Office will decide whether he will be extradited to USA," said spokesman Nils Busse, adding that the investigation would last for a long period of time.
The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, also known as the Islamic Party of Turkestan, had kidnapped four U.S mountaineers in Kyrgyzstan in August 2000 and held them hostage for a few days until they escaped.
