Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said Iran is seeking information on the cargoes and destinations of Thai vessels to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The request comes as Bangkok negotiates with Tehran to allow Thai cargo ships and oil tankers to transit the strait, the Thai Enquirer reported Thursday.
Thailand is compiling the details and will discuss them further with Oman during Sihasak’s visit from Wednesday to Thursday, while also seeking Omani support in communicating with Iran.
He said the negotiations are intended for vessels carrying cargo directly to Thailand without making additional stops.
Bangkok is also reviewing options to purchase oil from Russia. Authorities are assessing whether Russian crude is compatible with Thai refineries and how payments can be arranged safely given sanctions risks.
The US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire on Wednesday, brokered by Pakistan, as a step toward a broader deal to halt a conflict launched by Washington and Tel Aviv against Tehran on Feb. 28 that has left thousands dead and wounded.
According to a tally by Anadolu, at least 27 people from Asian countries have been killed or remain missing since the conflict began.
The victims include nine from India (including one missing), four from Bangladesh, four from Pakistan, three from Thailand, two from the Philippines, and one each from China and Nepal, while three from Indonesia remain missing.
