BRUSSELS
NATO members agreed on Wednesday to extend Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen's term as the head of the alliance by one year.
The extension extends Rasmussen's term to five years until July 31, 2014. NATO will then seek consensus over a new secretary general to replace him.
Rasmussen's nomination to the post in 2009 took long negotiations in a summit meeting co-hosted by France and Germany and he was appointed to the post after Turkey cleared him.
Former Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini is the most likely candidate to succeed the former Danish prime minister.
