LAGOS, Nigeria
At least 12 workers have been killed and three others have been injured in an oil pipeline explosion in southern Nigeria's Bayelsa State, the oil giant Agip (Eni) announced Friday.
“The explosion resulted in the death of 12 members of the maintenance team of a local company of services," Filipo Cotalini, spokesman for Agip (Eni), which operates the oil field in the area, said in a statement on Friday.
Cotalini confirmed that the incident also left three others injured.
The explosion occurred Thursday at the site of the repair works of the Tebidaba-Clough Creek line, an oil pipeline in Nigeria’s onshore Niger Delta, he added.
The statement added that the incident was being investigated by a joint investigation team of Eni, local community and the state's environment officials.
