Iran's foreign ministry summoned Pakistan's ambassador to Tehran on Wednesday to lodge a protest against the killing of eight of its border guards.
A Pakistani foreign office official confirmed to The Anadolu Agency the summons, which came after Tehran blamed Pakistan for not controlling the border with Iran.
Pakistan earlier has assured an "active investigation" into the killings, which occurred within Iranian borders.
"In case the culprits have crossed over to Pakistan after committing the crime on Iran’s soil, they will be apprehended and brought to justice," said Foreign Office spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam.
Iran has claimed that the attackers entered Iran from Pakistani territory.
It has blamed the attack on hardline Sunni group Jaish ul-Adl, which is believed to use Pakistan as a base for cross-border attacks against Iran.
