CAIRO
Political bureau chief of Hamas, Khaled Mashal, has called for real pressure to be applied on Israel.
"If the Obama government is eager to free the Palestinian people from oppression, establish peace and stop the bloodshed in the region, we would like to remind them that real peace can only be achieved by justice and hence returning the rights of the Palestinian people," said Mashal in a press conference on Tuesday.
Stating that they would be pleased with all types of efforts of Europe and US in regards to establishment of an independent Palestinian state on Palestine's own land, Mashal said, "the problem is neither Hamas nor Fatah, the problem is Israel. Therefore, whoever is willing to change the current situation should apply real pressure on Israel where the right wing's position has strengthened following the Israeli elections."
Mashal also stated that peace talks have ceased over a year ago due to the construction of new settlements on Palestinian land by the order of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
