OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso
A Romanian security guard working in a manganese mine in northeastern Burkina Faso has been kidnapped by unidentified militants, a police official said.
"Militants on a pickup truck arrived at the mine in Tambao [near the border with Mali] and opened fire at the mine's workers, injuring a policeman. They also kidnapped a Romanian security guard," gendarmerie spokesman Herve Hie told The Anadolu Agency.
The Burkinabe army is currently sweeping the nearby areas in pursuit of the attackers, the official added.
Souleymane Mihin, an official with Pan African Minerals company which operates the mine, told AA that the attack was staged by five assailants.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which is the first of its kind in Burkina Faso in recent years.
