ZENICA, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The bodies of some of the five fatalities from Friday’s coalmine disaster in Bosnia were recovered on Saturday.
The bodies of Mehemed Dizdarevich and Mehmedaliya Halilovich were taken from the mine in Zenica, 70 km north of the capital Sarajevo.
Search teams are still working to recover the bodies of Fahir Halaca, Hayrudin Bradarats and Feyzo Isakovich.
Thirty-four miners were trapped inside the collapsed Raspotocje coalmine in central Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday. The authorities said that the collapse was triggered by a 3.5 earthquake that hit the region, causing a gas explosion inside the mine.
While 22 of the 56 miners managed to escape, 34 others were trapped inside, according to mine manager Esad Civic. Twenty-nine miners were rescued later, while five died inside the underground complex.
The Zenica coal mine was the site of one of the greatest mining tragedies in the Bosnian history when 39 workers were killed in a gas explosion in 1982.
