Syrian opposition groups from different ethnicities and religions announced Wednesday they are establishing a new party, the name and leader of which have yet to be determined.
"We are forming a new party to gather different ethnic and religious groups under one umbrella, and to lay the foundations for a strong Syria after the current order's fall," Syria's former ambassador to Baghdad told Anadolu Agency at a three-day meeting organized by Arabs Association for Solidarity and Assistance (ARAP-DER) in Turkey's south-eastern border province of Gaziantep.
Expressing the groups' aims to be politically active in Syria and prepare for what he called the "post-independence war" period, Nawaf Fares said their most imporrtant objective is the formation of a political entity to preserve and protect their country with a "solid infrastructure."
"We are dreaming of a country based on the principles of law where every citizen can express themselves freely and enjoy their rights," he added.
More than 100,000 people have died in Syria’s three-year civil war, and there are 2.5 million refugees in neighboring countries.
