Syria's OIC membership suspended

JEDDAH  Syria's membership in the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has been suspended following a two-day extraordinary summit of the organization in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said Thursday that from now on it was impossible for Syria to take any step within OIC.
The 4th extraordinary summit meeting of OIC took place in Mecca on August 14 and 15.
The final statement of the summit said Syria's membership was officially suspended.
In OIC's history, memberships of only Egypt and Afghanistan have been suspended so far.
Ihsanoglu told reporters that only Iran objected to the decision about Syria, but it did not show a serious resistance.
Syria will not attend any OIC meeting from now on, said Ihsanoglu, adding that Syria missed the chance to have a voice within OIC which had the highest number of member states in the world behind the United Nations.
Noting that Syrian administration, despite all peaceful initiatives, preferred to close its doors, Ihsanoglu said that despite this stance of Syrian administration, OIC would continue its efforts to end the bloodshed.
